Eastern Christian Churches celebrated Epiphany on January 19th. Per Wikipedia, Epiphany “is a Christian feast day that celebrates the revelation of God the Son as a human being in Jesus Christ.” Okay, so why am I posting this? Well, “Eastern Christians commemorate the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River, seen as his manifestation to the world as the Son of God.” They do this by immersing themselves in (cold, ice-covered) rivers. Tennessee Republican Says Gay People Like Beastiality and That Heterosexuals Can’t Get HIV

January 27, 2012

Wow. There are some crazy homophobic people out there. And this one, a Republican from Tennessee, got elected to the State Senate. Stacey Campfield is one scary guy. He was interviewed on Michelangelo Signorile’s Sirius XM OutQ radio show, and Signorile shared some of what was said in his Huffington Post column.

Campfield was behind legislation that would ban discussion of ”sexual orientation other than heterosexuality” in Tennessee schools.

Here are some quotes from the interview:

On bullying in schools:

There are sexually confused children who could be pushed into a lifestyle that I don’t think is appropriate with them and it’s not for the norm for society, and they don’t know how they can get back from that. I think a lot of times these young teens and young children, they find it very hard on themselves and unfortunately some of them commit suicide.

On why he pushed legislation to only allow discussion of heterosexuality:

[Homosexuals] do not naturally reproduce. It has not been proven that it is nature. It happens in nature, but so does beastiality. That does not make it right or something we should be teaching in school.

On HIV/AIDS:

Most people realize that AIDS came from the homosexual community — it was one guy screwing a monkey…

My understanding is that it is virtually — not completely, but virtually — impossible to contract AIDS through heterosexual sex…very rarely [transmitted].

What’s the average lifespan of a homosexual? it’s very short. Google it yourself.

One thing I don’t get is why someone with these views would go on a gay-focused radio program. I wish I could say I wish horrified that that a someone like this can survive in today Republican party, but the primary season has shown us otherwise.

Ugly Betty’s Michael Urie on “Bromance” With Nick Jonas

January 27, 2012

Nick Jonas debuted in his leading role in Broadway’s How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, replacing Darren Criss (who himself replaced Daniel Radcliffe). Jonas wasn’t the only cast change, however. Michael Urie, who was on Ugly Betty, is “now co-starring as Bud Frump, Mr. Biggley’s lazy and conniving nephew,” reports Queerty.Urie told Queerty about his relationship with Jonas:

Nick is the greatest. We’ve been having such a blast together.  It was a real luxury getting to learn the show together in rehearsals. He’s incredibly generous, and such a natural on the stage. I’ve learned a lot from him.

Out Former Republican Chairman Ken Mehlman Stumps for Marriage Equality in New Hampshire

January 27, 2012

Ken Melhman, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee under George W. Bush, wrote an op-ed in New Hampshire’s influential Union Leader newspaper that “made the case for marriage equality based on the core Republican principles of individual liberty and the pursuit of happiness. He said that marriage equality is consistent with “family values” and the New Hampshire state motto of ‘Live Free or Die.’” Mehlman came out as gay after his term as RNC chair was over. He penned this op-ed piece now because Republicans in the New Hampshire legislature are working to overturn marriage equality laws in the state.

The Advocate reported that “Mehlman said he would be in New Hampshire this week to lobby Republican lawmakers to oppose a same-sex marriage repeal effort in the House. The measure, which Democratic governor John Lynch has promised to veto, would replace same-sex marriages with civil unions for any unmarried adults, including relatives. Individuals would be allowed not to recognize civil unions.”
