Quickclick: Top Gun’s Kelly McGillis Comes Out
Top Gun’s female star — Kelly McGillis — comes out as lesbian. This in a video interview with the SheWired website. McGillis guest starred on the L-Word as a closeted Army officer but and, until now, was in the closet herself. McGillis said she was “done with the man thing. Done with that, and [she] needs to move on in life, and that’s another part of being true to yourself.”
Also, Pink is the New Blog gives her a big “you go, girl!” and AfterEllen says Bill O’Rielly called her a “pinhead” for coming out.

NY Times Reporter Acts Gay Towards Obama?
That’s what Bill O’Rielly says, according to Gawker. New York Times reporter Jeff Zeleny asked President Obama what was the “most enchanting” part (along with “humbing, “surprising” and “troubing”) of his first 100 days in office.
O’Rielly and his guest commentator said:
O’Reilly: Did he actually say that word, enchanted?
Goldberg: I cannot picture any journalist asking Franklin Roosevelt if he was enchanted…. Because they were men of a different era, they were men of a John Wayne era. Today’s men…especially men in journalism, they’re softer…. They want to know about your feelings.
O’Reilly: I don’t know what that means. I know what the enchanted forest is…
Goldberg: It’s the kind of question that fits our metrosexual times, if you know what I mean.
MediaMatters.org has video of the Fox News incident. Zeleny is, according to Out Magazine, a gay man. Homophobia on Fox, anyone?
Vintage Gay Couple Pix

Over on Flickr, there’s an amazing set of photos of vintage male, and a few female, couples. (A guy named seatttletim in the genius behind this.) Truely touching shots that look to span a century. Some are clearly gay couples, other maybe just bromances. Definately worth a look.

Reaction to Matthew Shepard “Hoax” Comment
As we reported yesterday, North Carolina Republican Virginia Foxx claimed it was a “hoax” to call Matthew Shepard’s brutal murder a hate crime. This during debate over the federal hate crimes bill in the US House of Representatives. There’s lots of reaction to this.
The Human Rights Campaign reports that Judy Shepard (Matthew’s mother), who was in the House gallery during Foxx’s remarks.
The Associated Press says that Foxx now claims she didn’t mean to say what she did; that it was a “poor choice of words.” Towleroad has Foxx’s full statement, and the source Foxx purported to use to back up the original remarks.
Politico has statements from other House members, including Florida Democrat Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Schultz said: ”It’s just sad the Republican caucus has been reduced such a fringe. It’s sad they would go out of their way to prevent people from getting justice.”
The Charlotte Observer, Foxx’s hometown newspaper has a general overview of reaction.
Finally, Gay Rights Watch debunks Foxx’s claim that the hate crimes act wasteful government spending, saying the bill would cost the federal government only about $10 million over four years.
See our original post — and the hateful remarks for yourself.
Maine Senate Approves Same Sex Marriage
Maine’s Senate approved an equal marriage rights bill that, if signed into law, would legalize same-sex marriage in the state. The vote was 20 yes to 15 no. A second vote is required in the Senate and then a vote in the Maine House before the measure would get to governor John Baldacci (per WMTW).
According to the AP, upon passage of the bill, a Republican senator introduced an amendment to the legislation that would require a statewide referendum before legalizing statewide marriage.
Governor Baldacci has not indicated whether he would sign the bill, but a detailed report at Pam’s House Blend suggest he’s giving it due consideration.
Library of Congress Fires Transgendered Soldier
SFist found this in the Washington Post: The Library of Congress has been ordered to pay a former solider $500,000 for firing her after learning the employee was to undergo sex reassignment surgery. Diane (formerly David) Schroer, a former Army Special Forces colonel, was hired by the Congressional Research Service as a terrorism analyst. The day after hiring Schroer, after fining out he was to become Diane, she was fired. The Library of Congress argued it wasn’t illegal to discriminate against transgender people. Thankfully, the judge didn’t agree.
Quickclick: Gay Men in Bed, on Fox’s 24

OhLaLa Magazine reports on a super-minor story on last night’s 24 on Fox. And that’s the point: gay men are presented as normal and in bed like any couple. Progress comes in big and small steps. They have pix (but no video).
