North Carolina Republican Calls Matthew Shepard “Hoax”

During today’s House debate over the federal Hate Crimes Act, North Carolina Republican Rep. Virginia Fox claimed that Matthew Shepard’s brutal death was nothing more than a “hoax.” A simple robbery, she claimed, and certainly not a hate crime.  And so no need for hate crimes legislation. Gay Rights Watch also reports she said “you could vote against it because we are spending additional money.”

Asterisk points out she’s also spewing misinformation on Twitter. Media Matters debunks her hate, explain in detail why it was a hate crime.

See our post with reaction to Foxx’s hateful comment.
