NH Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage

Becoming the sixth US state to grant gays and lesbians this basic human right, New Hampshire has legalized same-sex marriage.  The process was legislatively drawn out, with the governor sending the bill back for some changes to make clear religious officials who object wouldn’t need need to officiate at same-sex marriages.  The AP reports Governor  ”Lynch said it is now time for the federal government to extend full equal rights to same-sex couples.”

Some NH residents, according to the AP, were upset that LGBT people decided separate wasn’t equal:

“The pro-gay marriage people have been very disingenuous,” said Fenton Groen, 59, of Rochester, N.H. “They told us two years ago that if civil unions were passed, that would completely satisfy them. Within two years, they have completely changed their minds.”

Ah, shucks. Sorry for wanting equal rights. Not. The law takes effect January 1, 2010.
