Pair at Gay ParadeClick over to Modern Destiny and find out about American Apparel’s new gay friendly shirts: “‘Pair at Gay Parade’ depicts ‘a pair [marching] down Santa Monica Blvd. in the West Hollywood Gay Pride Parade, 1984.’ [and] the ‘Anti-Homophobia Rally’ shirt shows ‘protestors outside an Anaheim hotel in 1989, holding signs to silently demonstrate their opposition to homophobia.’” Read the full post…

Quickclick: Out Lesbian Buys Chicago Cubs

Cubs LogoChicagoist reports that “With last week’s announcement of the Cubbies’ new ownership – the Ricketts family – came a historic, gay caveat. One of the four new sibling owners, out lesbian Laura Ricketts, has become the first openly gay owner of a professional sports team…Ricketts serves on the board of Lambda Legal, a nationwide LGBT advocacy organization that defends its clients against discrimination and supports same-sex marriage. Her work on LGBT issues stands in stark contrast to her family. Brother and fellow part owner Pete was formerly a candidate for the U.S. Senate in Nebraska, running on a socially conservative platform including opposition to gay marriage and abortion.”  Lesbian and homophobe brother team up to buy baseball team?  I sense a sitcom in the making.

Tim Gunn Loves His Nuts

Saxx UnderwearThat, dear readers, is Time Out New York’s conclusion based on Tim’s rave reviews of Saxx Apparel’s new underwear which “are designed to individually cup each ball.”  What exactly does Tim Gunn have to say about them?

When I saw them, I thought, Oh, jeez, how special can they possibly be? And then I tried them on! Oh my God! How did I survive this long without them? They are a perfect fit, and I’ve never felt more comfortable in an undergarment. Amazing.

Sax runs down the special ball-cupping technology here. Check out all of Saxx’s underwear here.

“Gaydar” Finds Gay People on Facebook

gaydar__1253454635_4006As part of a class project, MIT students have developed a system called “Project Gaydar” that predicts whether people are gay based on their Facebook friends.  The Boston Globe described it this way: “Using data from the social network Facebook, they made a striking discovery: just by looking at a person’s online friends, they could predict whether the person was gay. They did this with a software program that looked at the gender and sexuality of a person’s friends and, using statistical analysis, made a prediction.”

The project was intended to examine the privacy implications of online social relationships — that is, what can be deduced about a person based on their friend networks.  So how did they make their predictions work? The Globe explains that “the idea behind the MIT work, done in 2007, is as old as the adage that birds of a feather flock together. For years, sociologists have known of the ‘homophily principle’ – the tendency for similar people to group together.” Specifically, Gaydar looked at the gender and “interested in” info on Facebook profiles, as well as a person’s friends.  If you’re gay, you’re likely to have more gay friends.  Their research suggests that they can accurately predict whether someone who doesn’t publish their sexual orientation on his or her profile is gay or straight.

Gay and Out in Middle School

27out.1-190Sunday’s New York Times Magazine has an absolutely gripping article about gay and lesbian kids who are out in middle school.  Written by Benoit Denizet-Lewis, the article looks at the lives of gay 12, 13 and 14 year olds.  One, 13-year old Austin who lives in Tulsa, goes to his first gay dance alone because his 14-year jock boyfriend couldn’t find a ride.  Another is a Justin, a 13-year old in New England.

Through the lives of these kids, Lewis looks at the impact of verbal and physical ant-gay bullying in middle school, and how schools are dealing (or not dealing) with it. The article is touching and enlightening at the same time — and shows how far we’ve come and how far we need to go.

Justin Timberlake and the Man With the Machine Gun

0622_timberlake062009_10_x17This post has nothing to do with this blog, but, well, I thought the pic was so bizzare I decided to post it.  TMZ found this pic of Justin Timberlake arriving in Paris last week.  He’s cute, as always. And escorted by a cute machine-gun toting camo-wearing bodyguard.
