Phyllis Schlafly, Queen of the Homophobes Endorses Rick Santorum
Phyllis Schlafly, the old-school Regan-era (and before) homophobe is endorsing Rick Santorum. Congrats to Santorum on his race to prove he’s the biggest bigot out there. Santorum proudly announced her endorsement this way:
Verona, PA – This evening, in a message to her many supporters at the Eagle Forum, venerable conservative leader Phyllis Schlafly said:
“This is just a quick note to my Missouri friends to let you know that I’m planning to vote for Rick Santorum in the non-binding presidential preference primary on Tuesday, February 7.
Faithfully,
Phyllis Schlafly”

Romney Claims He Saved Massachusetts from Becoming a “Gay Las Vegas”
Speaking at CPAC, Mitt Romney sought to play up his conservative, anti-gay credentials by saying he prevented Massachusetts, which legalized same-sex marriage while he was governor, from becoming “the Las Vegas of gay marriage.”
Think Progress says that Romney “bragged about” using an obscure 1913 law, which was originally intended to limit inter-racial marriage, to keep out-of-state same-sex couples from tying-the-knot in Massachusetts:
ROMNEY: I fought to have a stay on that decision, then pushed for a marriage amendment to our Constitution. We lost by only one vote in the legislature. And I successfully prohibited out- of-state couples from coming to our state to get married and then going home. On my watch, we fought hard and prevented Massachusetts from becoming the Las Vegas of gay marriage.
When I am president, I will defend the Defense of Marriage Act, and I will fight for an amendment to our Constitution that defines marriage as a relationship between a man and a woman.

It was about time that Mitt Romney got glitter bombed. It’s happened to Rick Santorum and to Newt Gingrich. Now Mitt was in the line-of-glitter-fire in Denver. Luckily for Mitt, the Secret Service stepped into the line of fire.
White House Won’t Comment On Prop 8 Ruling
As one would probably expect in an election year in a country as polarized as this one, the White House has no comment on the ruling that Prop 8 was unconstitutional. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney has this to say:
I don’t have a comment on litigation in general and in this litigation to which we are not a party. Beyond that, I can say that the President has long opposed, as you know, divisive and discriminatory efforts to deny rights and benefits to same-sex couples.
Not much of a comment.

Rick Santorum Says Gays Don’t Deserve “Privilege” Of Marriage
Campaigning in Fulton, Georgia, Rick Santorum told a gay man that he doesn’t deserve the “privilege” of marriage. Why? The usual religious right junk, plus more. Apparently heterosexual marriage (as long as it produces offspring) is an “intrinsic good” and so straight people get the “privilege” of marriage. As for same-sex marriage? Well Santorum says it doesn’t “benefit society.”
You’re not entitled “to special treatment under the law…[Marriage is] not a right, it’s something that has existed since the beginning of human history as an institution where men and women come together for the purposes of forming a natural relationship as God made it to be. And for the purposes of having children and continuing that civilization. It is an intrinsic good…And as a result of that, we extend a privilege. We extend certain privileges to people who do that because we want to encourage that behavior. [...]
Two people who may like each other or may love each other who are same-sex, is that a special relationship? Yes it is, but it is not the same relationship that benefits society like a marriage between a man and a woman.

Out Gay Lesgislator Runs For Gabby Giffords House Seat
As everyone in America knows, Representative Gabby Giffords resigned her seat in the House of Representatives. Now, Arizona state representative Matt Heinz, who represents Tucson, is running for her seat in the Democratic primary.
It is with deep respect for Congresswoman Giffords and her work that I humbly submit my candidacy to the people of southern Arizona. Gabby has come so far in her recovery, and I wish her continued healing. Gabby put southern Arizona before party or ideology and that legacy must be continued.
The Phoenix New Times says that “Heinz has served in the Legislature since 2009. In addition to his gig in the state House of Representatives, Heinz is a doctor at the Tucson Medical Center.”

Washington State on the Cusp of Marriage Equality
Washington state is poised to implement marriage equality laws that would legalize same sex marriage. Reuters reports that the state Senate is expected to pass a marriage equality bill tonight. Passage in the state House of Representatives is “virtually assured” and “Governor Christine Gregoire, a Democrat in her final year in office, announced last month she was backing the gay marriage bill.”
Microsoft, Nike, Starbucks and other local corporate powerhouses have supported the legislation.
Nashville Restaurant Throws Homophobic GOP State Senator Out
We’ve written about Stacey Campfield, the Tennessee Republican state senator who thinks Gay = AIDS. A Nashville restaurant has had enough of him, refusing to serve him, reports Nashville 21:
The restaurant The Bistro at the Bijou in Knoxville refused service to one Sen. Stacey Campfield. They posted a FB message that said, “I hope that Stacy Campfield now knows what if feels like to be unfairly discriminated against.” From all that I can ascertain, that was a response to not serving him for his well documented views of ignorance and bigotry towards the GLBT community.
The restaurant’s proprietor said this to Metro Pulse: “I didn’t want his hate in my restaurant. I told him he wasn’t welcome here. … I feel like he’s gone from being stupid to being dangerous, and I wanted to stand up to him.” She also says “Campfield is a bully. He needed to be stood up to.”
Romney Campaign Publicizes Support From Pastor Who Links 9/11 and Marriage Equality
Mitt Romney’s campaign has released a letter from Roberto Miranda and 20 other far-right religious leaders. In the letter, the group talks about how Romney prevented Massachusetts from being “flooded” by same-sex couples after same-sex marriage was legalized there:
He and his staff identified and enforced a little-known 1913 law that allowed them to order local clerks not to issue marriage licenses to out-of-state couples. Absent this action, homosexual couples would surely have flooded into Massachusetts from other states to get “married” and then demanded that their home states recognize the “marriages,” putting the nation only one court decision away from nationalizing “same-sex marriage.”
Miranda feels that the 9/11 terrorist attacks are directly linked to marriage equality in Massachusetts:
[He] sees marriage equality as the work of the Devil and has drawn a “direct correlation between marriage equality and the September 11th terrorist attacks.” “Is it exaggerated to see prophetic significance in the fact that on September 11, 2001 Boston served as the point of departure for the deadly forces that spread so much destruction and havoc in this nation and all over the world,” he asked. “What took place at the material level is now being carried out at the moral and spiritual level, as the virus of homosexuality and gay marriage begins to spread dramatically all over this nation and perhaps the world.”
